Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This is a full-time position that will promote and market the University of Maryland and the 4-H Youth Development program in Charles County to increase youth enrollment and expand the program within the county. The work will primarily be with children and youth, with an emphasis on reaching underserved areas and populations in the Western side of the county.

Position located off-campus at the Charles County Extension Office in Bel Alton, MD.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Graduation from High School (or GED).

Experience:

Five years’ experience performing a variety of duties in support of the teaching, demonstration, and advising work of Extension agents or in community outreach, health care, research, or social services programs.

Other:
Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge in the assigned area of specialization such as food and nutrition, housing, horticulture, soil nutrient management or youth programs.
  • Skill to plan and carry out details of projects with general instruction.
  • Skill to make arithmetic calculations, analyze data and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill to establish and maintain successful working relationships.
  • Ability to lift and transport supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to operate manual and automated office equipment and personal computers.

Other:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Conditions of Employment:
Personal transportation and valid driver’s license required. Employee will be required to use their personal vehicle while conducting official business. Some evening and weekend hours required. Occasionally, regional or state travel is required for training and programming. Employment will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.

Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands and arms to reach, handle, lift, move or feel various objects, including furniture and small animals. The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and /or carry up to 40 pounds. Carts are available for transporting materials. Environmental conditions vary; primarily in office, but also exposed to outdoor conditions during youth camp and fairs.

Additional Information:

  • This position is subject to a Criminal History Record Check and University of Maryland Background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion and clearance of the Criminal History Record Check.
  • This position requires a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of duties, including teaching, demonstrations, and other educational activities for youth and adult volunteers.
  • Promote, market, and organize 4-H clubs to reach underrepresented audiences and underserved areas of the county through outreach programing.
  • Implement youth development programs on the Western Side of Charles County that follow the 4-H model of experiential learning and which emphasize forming 4-H clubs that foster long-term youth engagement..
  • Coordinate programming with community partners at public schools, afterschool programs, parks and recreation community centers, etc. to provide enrichment opportunities in the areas of STEM (robotics and computer science).
  • Expand the 4-H Club program by promoting and recruiting adult 4-H club volunteers for Clover age youth, 5-7 years old.
  • Work with volunteers and youth to promote and maintain the Robotics program
  • Collect data on community needs and program participation in the targeted areas.
  • Assist with organization and implementation of 4-H activities and demonstrations, at various venues including the Charles County Fair and at community events.
  • Interact with community partners/public in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Prepare educational literature, promotional flyers, reports, and program documents.
  • Maintain accurate client and other program related records.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings and statewide in-services/training sessions throughout the year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Nature of the Position: This position frequently presents information through vocal and written communication to individuals of various ages, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Physical Demands: A routine part of this position’s responsibilities would be to transport materials to and from teaching and event locations, including loading and unloading the vehicle. The employee will frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Set-up and teardown of displays, tables, and chairs would be necessary at many teaching sites.
  • Environmental: Team driven, office environment of professional character, competence, and collaboration. Deadline driven in terms of program planning and reporting. This position requires the employee to work outdoors at certain times of the year, especially during the time field research, demonstrations, and meetings are conducted as well as annual county fair. This may occur during very hot and/or inclement weather.
  • Visual Acuity: Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data and presentations.
