Job Summary/Basic Function
About the Role:

This position will be working to detect Methane Leaks in soils from buried pipelines through employing infrared optical imaging and acoustical emission systems. The research project bears upon whether hydrocarbon gas emissions can be detected remotely using optical gas imaging equipment. And upon detection, how can we identify the provenance of the leak. This will require acoustical signatures, infrared optical imaging, and knowledge of the fluid dynamics of methane in soils under differing moisture contents. The goal is to obtain the acoustic signatures frequency peaks from the experimental gas leaks from each acoustic device and to be able to identify the leak location.

    • Research (conducting research, writing grant, submitting journal paper, participate in weekly meetings and help to prepare reports and presentations for project sponsor, etc.)

Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift 25 lbs. and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing and walking between buildings.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
  • Recently awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate
  • Earned terminal degree in physics, engineering, geology, or a closely related STEM field. · Experience in physical science and/or engineering research.
  • Experience in simulation & modeling of fluid flow.
  • Experience in statistical analysis and quality analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advanced mathematics at the level of Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences (text from Mary L. Boas), all 15 chapters.
  • Experience in AutoCAD and programming languages (C++ and Python).
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in working in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated skills in effective communication (written and oral) particularly for disseminating research results with peer-reviewed journals and with industrial cohorts.

Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
Preference will be given to applicants who meet the requirements listed above and one or more of the following:
  • Experience developing grant proposals, success securing and mentoring external funding. ·
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience pipeline installation and associated chemical processes.
  • Experience in industry/university partnership development and operations.
