Essential Job Duties

The Program Director of Communication Skills Training plays a crucial role in fostering a dynamic and productive environment within our Graduate School. This position is integral to the professional development of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars aiming for careers in academia, industry, non-profit, or government sectors. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Professional Development, the Program Director enhances existing co-curricular content, devises new programming, supports the workflow of the Professional Development Team, and offers guidance on both written and oral communication.

In particular, the Program Director oversees the management and success of programs like the Writing Certificate and Engineering Café writing workshops. Additionally, they develop and manage other programs or certificates focused on written and oral communication. These initiatives encompass various formats, such as co-curricular workshops, multi-week development series, writing retreats, speaking skills training, and other events.

Moreover, the Program Director leads the Graduate School Dissertation Completion Grant program, providing coaching and mentoring to dissertation writers within six months of completion. This program enables candidates to concentrate full-time on writing, enhancing dissertation quality, and shortening completion time.

The Program Director collaborates with the Professional Development team to ensure that programs foster competencies in career and self-development, leadership, teamwork, oral and written communication, and well-being.

Funded by both the Graduate School and the College of Engineering, this position closely collaborates with stakeholders in the College of Engineering on oral communication and writing-related initiatives for master’s and doctoral engineering students.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Assist with Graduate School orientations, the 3-Minute Thesis competition, New TA Workshop, and other community support efforts as required.
  • Collaborate with The Graduate Writing Support Center, Libraries, and relevant campus units to provide comprehensive written and oral communication support.

Additionally, this position is responsible for overseeing the Doctoral Dissertation Completion Grant Program. This program provides funding and intensive mentoring to doctoral candidates who are within six months of completing their dissertations. It is designed to allow candidates to dedicate full-time attention to writing their dissertations, thereby enhancing dissertation quality and expediting the completion of the doctoral degree.

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse individuals on a variety of issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; engaging presentation skills.
  • Effective initiative, excellent judgment, and an ability to independently function in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with a team and through partnerships both within and outside of the Graduate School; experience planning and working cooperatively on shared projects to achieve agreed-upon goals and results.
  • Knowledge of graduate education and the career support needs of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, including career opportunities across an array of fields and work environments.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Experience using data management systems that track attendance, progress towards certificates, and other information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English, Composition, Rhetoric, Technical Writing, or Communications or related field.
  • Training or certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and/or experience working with international graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars.
  • Experience designing, implementing and assessing courses and/or training programs.
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching and presentation methods.
  • Understanding of and ease with applying active learning techniques.
  • Teaching/facilitation/presentation experience (broadly conceived).
  • Experience with large-scale event planning.
  • Experience working with graduate students and/or postdocs in scientific and engineering fields.
  • Experience working with international graduate students.
