Essential Job Duties

NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Wellness and Recreation Assistant Director, Sports Programs. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower students and professional staff to cultivate world-class recreation programs, services, and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom.

The Assistant Director, Sports Programs is responsible for the leadership and management of Wellness and Recreation Intramural Sports, Club Sports and sport event reservations and camps. This candidate will ensure the sports programs connect to the development and well-being of participants while mitigating risk through adhering to industry-established standards.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide leadership and direction for the Intramural Sports and Club Sports programs, ensuring development, promotion and successful implementation.
  • Provide strategic leadership and supervise two full­-time Coordinator, Sports Programs staff; indirectly manage approximately 150 student staff.
  • Lead assessment and evaluation efforts for sports programs (Intramural Sports & Club Sports) by identifying participation levels, program participant interests, and learning outcomes. Develop recommendations and implement new activities and special events.
  • Responsible for fiscal management of sports programs (Intramural Sports & Club Sports).
  • Oversee the sports programs (Intramural Sports & Club Sports) risk management plan.
  • Establish emergency protocols and responses to ensure staff is knowledgeable and prepared.
  • Advise approximately one­-third of the club sport organizations including student leaders, coaches, faculty advisors and others.
  • Contract and schedule athletic trainers for high-risk club sports organizations.
  • Collaborate with academic programs to schedule student Emergency Medical Technicians for sports programming.
  • Assist in the development of sports programs staff training opportunities for student program assistants, supervisors, evaluators, officials and scorekeepers with a focus on student development and learning.
  • Assist with development and implementation of select Intramural Sports leagues, tournaments and special events including development and execution of captains’ meetings, registration, scheduling, and officials’ training and development.
  • Oversee “sports-related” external events, including athletic camps, held within Wellness and Recreation facilities. Responsible for event coordination, staff training, equipment rental and scheduling.
  • Direct outdoor field painting operations for outdoor fields, including use of painting robot for Miller and Method Road fields.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in recreation, college student personnel, sports management, or related field. If in progress, must be completed by date of hire.
OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of full-time experience leading Club Sports and Intramural Sports programming, planning and implementation in a collegiate recreation environment.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with initiative, critical and creative thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, form partnerships and work effectively as a member of a fast-paced, results-oriented team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national trends and best practices in recreation programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and practices in promoting student development and learning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years of full-time experience leading Club Sports and Intramural Sports programming, planning and implementation in a collegiate recreation environment.
  • Experience managing full-time staff.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

Current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications.
