About the Department:

The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to provide excellent education and research opportunities to a diverse student body in order to prepare them for productive careers at industrial, governmental, and academic settings in the rapidly evolving fields of science and computing. The new specialized faculty members will join the program in August of 2024. These are nine (9) month tenure-track positions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach undergraduate and graduate online/face-to-face courses in Computer Science (CS) for majors and non-majors;

Assist with the further development of the CS program by actively contributing to the continuous improvement and ABET accreditation processes, curriculum development, and recruitment & retention efforts;

Provide academic advisement; participate in scholarly and research endeavors; solicit support for the CS program by engaging in grant and proposal writing; and serve on departmental, school and university committees.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned PhD in Computer Science or a related field by date of hire is required*.

Ability to strengthen the department’s focus in Cyber Security; Application Security; Network Security; Artificial Intelligence; Machine Learning; Blockchain and Data Science. Specialization in other areas of computer science will also be considered.

Candidates must be student-centered and have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education along with a demonstrated ability to pursue scholarly activities.

Successful candidates must demonstrate a willingness to support the ABET continuous improvement process.

Experience with sponsored research and innovative pedagogy will be given additional consideration.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

The successful candidate must have the potential to, or demonstrate the ability to, establish an externally funded research program.

Ability to work with persons from diverse backgrounds is required.

  • Virginia State University requires that faculty be appropriately credentialed to teach assigned courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. VSU demonstrates compliance with its Faculty Credentialing Policy #2301 for all applicable education, experience, licensure and certification requirements in the selection and hiring of its faculty.

Preferred, but Not Required:

Candidates at the Assistant Professor rank are preferred, but others will be considered.

Online teaching certificate is preferred.
