Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for summer part-time Star Program Instructors. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled. These are grant funded positions and continuation is dependent upon funding and/or need.
In line with its commitment to prepare students for the future, Xavier University hosts a variety of summer opportunities for middle and high school aged students designed to enrich their academic and social development. Through these programs, students will enhance their preparation for high school academics and get a jump start on understanding college life. Students from across the country will pursue their passions in a rigorous, supportive academic setting. Xavier offers exciting curricula ranging from science and math to history and writing. Students have the unique opportunity to explore an area of interest on a deeper level through in-class discussions, laboratory experiences and cultural explorations.
For 2024, all programs will be in-person on Xavier’s campus. Candidates must be able to teach in-person on-campus for the duration of the program. The Star Programs are five distinct courses designed for middle school and high school students who have expressed interest in STEM fields. Star Programs are designed to expose students to the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra, and Physics prior to taking them in school. Each program is three weeks and serves up to 75 participants/program or approximately 25 participants per instructor. Instructors will also have a Teaching Assistant (position held by a current Xavier student).
MATHStar I – June 3-June 21, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm – Students who will be taking Algebra I in Fall 2024 will get an academic jumpstart. This program moves quickly to cover basic algebra concepts like variables and algebraic expressions, equations, word problems, polynomials, and graphing. Students attend lessons taught by highly qualified instructors and be guided every step of the way by current XULA undergraduate students who serve as tutor-mentors. Guest speakers and interactive projects allow students to see themselves as a math pro.
 

CHEMStar – June 3-June 21, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm – CHEMStar focuses on concepts and skills designed to help students entering introductory high school chemistry in the fall. Students engage in interactive lectures, breakout drill sessions, and team projects designed to enhance their scientific knowledge and skills. Guest speakers with advanced degrees in chemistry spark interest in career opportunities.
MATHStar II – June 24-July 12, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm – Students headed for Geometry in Fall 2024 take an action-packed approach to explore the fundamentals and sharpen their skills to take on more advanced problems. Students attend lessons taught by highly qualified instructors and be guided every step of the way by current XULA undergraduate students who serve as tutor-mentors. Guest speakers and interactive projects allow students to see themselves as a math pro.
 

BIOStar – June 24-July 12, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm – BIOStar is a collaborative, engaging, intensive preparation course for introductory high school biology. Students are exposed to a wide swath of biology concepts and the most crucial tenants of the discipline, supported by instructor lessons, virtual labs, group drills, guest speakers, and personalized tutoring led by XU student mentors. Students participate in projects and group activities, culminating in a final project presented during a virtual awards ceremony.
 

PHYStar – June 3-June 21, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm – PHYStar will focus on concepts and skills for students entering high school physics in the fall. Students will gain a basic understanding of important physics concepts through interactive lessons and hands-on laboratory activities. Guest speakers and team projects will enhance learning and make physics come alive!
 

The Star Program Instructors will report to the Director of Pre-College Pipeline Programs and work closely with other summer program staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Earned bachelor’s degree
Two years of teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree
Valid State Teaching Certificate in Core Subject

Work Hours
Programs will be scheduled Monday-Friday, 8:30-5:30 CST. See xula.edu/precollegeprograms for specific program hours. Some work outside of program hours will be necessary to recruit students, prepare lessons, grade, and prepare reports.

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in instructional subject
  • At least two years of teaching experience, preferably in instructional subject
