Currently celebrating its 150th year, Bennett College is a historically Black liberal arts college for women in Greensboro, NC. With a 7/1 student/faculty ratio, Bennett is an intentional micro-college providing an intimate, engaging learning community that centers on the experiences and achievements of women of color. Bennett College is seeking new faculty who can contribute to the development of innovative and forward-leaning programs and curricula that prepare students for impactful civic engagement and leadership roles in their personal and professional lives. Traditional events and ceremonies throughout the academic year honor the College’s history and contribute to the holistic development of our students as scholars and leaders.  
 
Prospective biology faculty whose work touches on maternal and child health, health disparities, diversifying STEM/healthcare, and environmental justice are especially encouraged to apply. 

 

GENERAL SUMMARY:
 
Full-time non-tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with the opportunity to move into a tenure-track position. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach courses and the associated labs in at least three of the following areas: general biology, anatomy, physiology, botany, developmental biology, and molecular biology. The teaching load is 12 hours per semester, typically three four-credit courses offered on an innovative and flexible “minimester” schedule. Candidates should have teaching and mentoring experience at the post-secondary level; ideal candidates will also have peer-reviewed publications. Candidates should have a record of success in securing outside funding or be able to demonstrate the potential to do so. M.S. or Ph. D. in biology or a related field is required, Ph. D. is preferred. Candidates with the M.S. only should have research/lab and teaching experience. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Teach courses in and about the biological sciences including laboratory exercises
  • Manage the labs for their courses, including inventory, preparation, and maintenance 
  • Advise biology majors and minors with a focus on gaining skills and experiences in preparation for career entry, professional studies, and/or graduate school
  • Supervise student research and professional presentations
  • Oversee extracurricular professional development activities, and host guest speakers
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and community members in developing educational programs focused on STEM careers and projects
  • Contribute to innovative and scholarly literature in the field
  • Share in the administrative responsibilities of the biology program
  • Use cutting-edge teaching methods and technologies to engage students and ensure their success
  • Actively pursue outside funding
  • Serve on College committees and participate in the general administrative work of the College 
  • Attend faculty meetings and College events (such as Baccalaureate, Commencement, and convocations); participate in in Faculty-Staff Institutes at the beginning of each semester; participate in recruiting events, professional development workshops, and other programming as assigned by the Dean of Faculty or VP of Academic Affairs

 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of pedagogical techniques in the biological sciences 
  • Knowledge of current STEM methods and protocols 
  • Skills in multiple digital frameworks 
  • Skills in dissection and molecular biology 
  • Ability to keep accurate records 
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all College constituencies 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work within a diverse community 
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • M.S. or Ph. D. in biology or a related field is required, Ph. D. is preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching at an institution of higher learning
