The University of La Verne College of Law invites nominations, inquiries and expressions of interest for the position of Dean.

The College of Law was founded in 1970 and received accreditation from the California Committee of Bar Examiners in 1972. Until 2001, the College was located on the main campus in La Verne, California, which is on the eastern end of Los Angeles County at the gateway to California's Inland Empire, encompassing San Bernardino and Riverside counties. In January 2001, the law school relocated to a modern facility on a seven acre campus in the city of Ontario, approximately ten miles from main campus. In 2006, the law school was provisionally approved by the ABA and in 2016, received full ABA accreditation. In 2019, the Board decided to withdraw ABA accreditation, teach out current students under ABA standards, and begin a State Cal Bar accreditation legal program in Fall 2020. The College of Law offers a comprehensive full and part time program leading to a JD degree. Enrollment is projected to be between 150 and 300 students over the next five years.

The Dean is chief academic and administrative officer of the law school and reports to the Provost. The Dean is also a member of the University's Senior Management Team and serves on the Provost's Council. The University seeks to appoint a Dean who can identify and build upon current strengths to lead the College of Law.

Specific Duties:

  • Provide strong and decisive leadership in all aspects of the College of Law

  • Act as chief academic, administrative, and financial officer of the College

  • Expand and improve the educational experience of students

  • Promote and support faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service

  • Increase and maintain diversity in faculty, staff, and curriculum

  • Recruit and retain high quality faculty and staff

  • Engage in community outreach and the promotion of visibility of the institution

  • Prepare and supervise the budget for the College and advocate for resources

  • Engage in fundraising activities in conjunction with University Advancement

  • Guide the process of strategic planning

  • Implement strategies for improving bar passage rates in California

  • Oversee the hiring and evaluation of faculty and staff and manage personnel matters

  • Act as the liaison between the California Bar Association and California Committee of Bar Examiners

  • Work closely with the Provost, the other Deans, and the University Management Council on university-wide strategic initiatives

  • Teach classes in the law program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A JD or equivalent degree from a nationally or regionally accredited law school

  • Significant administrative experience

  • Teaching experience in higher education

  • Demonstrated record of:

    • collaborative leadership style

    • excellent interpersonal and communication skills

    • an ability to lead fund raising activities

    • an ability to relate to multicultural faculty and student body

    • commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion- commitment to inclusive leadership, engaging a diverse and productive faculty, staff, and student body

    • exceptional personal integrity, and an appreciation for the importance of the highest standards of professionalism and civility in the legal profession- a demonstrated commitment to promoting excellence in teaching, scholarship, and research in higher education, preferably in legal education

    • a history of administrative accomplishment, preferable in legal education

    • experience in enrollment management, budget management, and strategic planning initiatives

    • effective decision making and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with traditional day students and working adults

  • Demonstrated record of fund raising through grant writing and engaging donors

  • Demonstrated record of collaborative initiatives with corporate and/or community partners

  • Demonstrated outreach and stewardship of university alumni

  • Knowledge of the challenges facing California approved law schools

  • Admitted to a state bar

  • Practice experience
