National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina


The Immunity, Inflammation and Disease Laboratory of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Research Triangle Park, North Carolina is recruiting a Staff Scientist for the Matrix Biology Group under the leadership of Dr. Stavros Garantziotis, Tenure Track Investigator. The Matrix Biology Group uses cell culture models, mouse models of disease, and clinical research in a “bench-to bedside-to bench” approach to investigate the role of innate immunity and the extracellular matrix in environmental lung injury and lung disease.

A Staff Scientist is a NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position to support the long-term research of a Principal Investigator. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources but do work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. Staff Scientists should be capable of independently designing experiments and guiding research projects. The Staff Scientist in this position will also have responsibilities in supervising and mentoring postbaccalaureate students and postdoctoral trainees within the group.

The NIEHS has a robust Intramural Research Program that actively studies how the environment impacts human health. Faculty interests range from Epidemiology and Biostatistics to Epigenetics, Development, Signal Transduction, Neurobiology, and Immunity. The Intramural Research Program hosts several state-of-the-art core facilities that provide intramural scientists support in Epigenomics, Mass Spectrometry, Bioinformatics, Metabolomics, Microscopy, and Structural Biology (including CryoEM). The successful candidate will have access to all NIEHS support facilities.

Salary/Benefits:
The successful candidate for this position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments with full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent).

Qualifications:

We are seeking an experienced scientist in the fields of microbiome analysis and immune-microbiome interactions in the lung. Translational research experience, incorporating the fields of mouse and human microbiome analysis, is essential. Laboratory experience with molecular biology techniques, as well as mouse model expertise in the field of lung injury are required. Established track record of mentoring and team leadership, as well as excellent oral and written communications skills are highly preferred. Candidates must have an PhD or MD with 3+ years of postdoctoral experience in immunology, microbiology, or a related field.
