We are currently seeking a Research Chemical Engineer. This position located in Pittsburgh, PA.

Seeking a Researcher with experience in the development of solid sorbents to clean up coal waste streams, including flue gas desulfurization water and acid mine water. The objective of the effort is to develop basic immobilized amine sorbent (BIAS) materials for the selective removal of heavy metals from industrial waste waters.


Sorbents will be developed that can reduce both the regulated oxy-anionic heavy metals as well as the regulated cationic metals to, permissible discharge levels by using a flow-based treatment method.


  • Formulating sorbents that are designed to clean up coal wastewaters.

  • Characterizing the materials to ensure desired properties are achieved.

  • Converting sorbents into appropriately-size pellets.

  • Screening the sorbents and/or pellets for metal uptake.

  • Performing capacity testing to treat authentic coal waste samples and simulants thereof.

  • Developing processes for selective elution of metals from coal wastewater, including process and reactor design.

  • Organizing, analyzing, and presenting data from research.

  • Presenting ideas and results to the research team in group meetings.

  • Contributing to future research planning and assisting with proposals.

  • Working independently and collaboratively with members of the research team to meet milestones and deliverables.

  • Present technical findings during regular team meetings as well as at workshops and professional conferences.

  • Assisting or leading efforts in writing research papers to be published in journals and creating conference presentations.

  • A PhD. in chemical engineering, or a related field with 2yrs experience.

  • Experience in the development and evaluation of sorbent materials for wastewater cleanup.

  • Experience in pelletization of sorbent materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.

  • The candidate will have experience in the following characterization techniques:


    • Furier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)

    • Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA)

    • Scanning electrn microscopy (SEM)

  • Familiarity working in a government operated National Laboratory
