Position Focus:

The Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) seeks a Forest Economy Research Fellow to conduct research and analysis that helps deliver on the large climate mitigation potential of the forest sector. This 12-month position will be based at F&ES and work closely with The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Global Forestry & Wood Products team.

Recent research has identified the enormous potential of forests to help address climate change. However, the scale at which changes must occur in order to impact climate requires new approaches to reforestation, forest management, and forest conservation. The successful candidate will help to explore the potential of levers such as policy, finance, markets, and supply chains to deliver large-scale, climate-positive land use change, and the potential of forest product substitution for carbon-intensive alternative materials to harness the energy of private sector activity to deliver climate-positive outcomes.

The Forest Economy Research Fellow position will focus on research, analysis, and related work that advances our understanding of the potential of reforestation and forest product utilization to contribute to climate change mitigation. Specific activities will be agreed upon between the Yale Principal Investigator (PI) and a designated representative of The Nature Conservancy, and may include one or more of the following:

1. Coordination of a multi-institutional assessment of the climate and forest management impacts of increased utilization of mass timber in key global markets such as the US, Europe and China, including co- or lead-authorship of one or more peer-reviewed publications or reports.
2. Assessment of links between forest products demand, timber harvest, and deforestation & reforestation in selected forested regions.
3. Assessment of patterns, processes and drivers of natural forest regeneration in selected regions, and analyses of programmatic or policy interventions to increase the rate and persistence of naturally regenerated forests.
4. Evaluation of the potential for increased forest product utilization in the USA to deliver climate benefits, and of the associated safeguards required to ensure desired climate, community welfare, and environmental sustainability outcomes. Collaboration with F&ES graduate students in related research projects and engagement in related F&ES courses.

Essential Duties

1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Critical analytical thinking. Excellent English oral and written communication skills. Ability to write and speak in a language other than English, such as Spanish or Portuguese.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Cross-cultural professional or educational experience. Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Financial analysis skills. Knowledge of ArcGIS or other spatial information management or analytical systems.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability writing and editing promotional and informational material. NGO and/or corporate relations abilities.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary context. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to be a team player. Ability to work independently.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

MA in Forestry or Business Admin. Knowledge of forestry, environmental, or natural resource business, policy & economics & tropical and temperate silviculture. Experience researching, critically analyzing, evaluating information from divergent sources & compiling results into cohesive reports and with growth-and-yield modelling.
