Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Office of Development facilitates philanthropic support for outstanding education, research and community partnerships within the UMD School of Public Health. The Development team also partners with the SPH Alumni Network Board to engage our 20K+ alumni.

The Development Specialist plays an important role by providing administrative support to the Assistant Dean for Development and the Development Program Manager and participating in fundraising cultivation.

Job Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Conduct daily administrative tasks (i.e., copying, filing, mailing, e-mailing, data entry etc.) including entering donor contact reports into the confidential Blackbaud Reeher donor database.
  • Draft donor acknowledgement letters.
  • Assist Development Program Manager with Alumni Network activities & outreach.
  • Work with the Communications team to ensure events and activities are publicized via email and online, and setup and manage event registrations in the AlumnIQ system.
  • Attend occasional Development & Alumni Network evening/weekend events.
  • Support Development team on school-wide events/projects.
  • Plan for FY25 events (e.g. Giving Day, Dean’s Recognition Ceremony, Gymkana Home Show).
  • Prepare confidential briefings for donor visits and events.
  • Prepare stewardship mailings including holiday cards and scholarship thank-you letters.
  • Update development, alumni, and fund content on the SPH website and UMD Giving website.
  • Assist Development Program Manager with preparing giveaways for off campus/on campus donor visits to the school.
  • Support the Assistant Dean for Development with sharing student perspectives to donors.
  • Conduct prospect and donor research.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • This posting is only open to master’s students who are currently enrolled at the University of Maryland College Park for the 2024-2025 school year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Prior upper-level coursework in English writing, management, and/or communications
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to accurate, high-quality storytelling.
  • Able to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
  • Detail-oriented, disciplined, and trustworthy. Able to handle all confidential donor related tasks/duties appropriately.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Pursuing a degree in public health, journalism, business, communications, design, or nonprofit management.
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office Applications, Google Applications, Asana, AlumnIQ.
  • Experience or knowledge with data entry.
  • Knowledge of and/or passion for the field of public health.

Additional Information:

Conditions of Employment:
  • Interested in philanthropy, fundraising, and the nonprofit sector.
  • Able to commit 20 hours per week across at least three weekdays and attend occasional evening/weekends as needed.
  • Willing to commit to working from at least July 14, 2024 through June 27, 2025, including. summer and winter terms (hybrid work schedule possible). Start date as early as June 2, 2024 preferred.

This is a level 1, 12-month GA position with a yearly salary of about $34,000 per Graduate School guidelines, plus fringe [health benefits] and tuition remission (up to 10 credits/semester if full-time student).
