Departmental Objective: 
The University Police Department's mission is to patrol the University properties helping to assure safety and wellbeing of students, faculty, staff and visitors to the campus by using the philosophy of community policing. The Department's mission will be achieved through a proactive, community service approach to problem resolution and by offering crime prevention programs on safety, self-protection, substance abuse, sexual assault and protection of personal belongings. This mission will be the charge of every employee of this Department.

Purpose of Position:
Under general direction of a sergeant, the Corporal performs a variety of general law enforcement duties. Work assignments typically require the incumbent to exercise independent judgment and action. The Corporal rank is distinguished from the Police Officer by the regular, ongoing assignments of one or more of the following: assignment as a team leader, assistant watch commander or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing direction to officers in the field. The Corporal performs special assignments on a regular, ongoing basis including, but not limited to: Field Training Officer (FTO), investigator/detective, crime prevention specialist, and/or community relations specialist.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) and/or Competencies: 

Required:
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, law enforcement techniques, procedures, operations, investigations, court procedures, crime prevention, safety and security
Knowledge of function and organization of a college
Knowledge of and experience in human relations and personnel management, delegation of authority and accountability for assignments
Ability to interact productively with the community
Ability to exercise tact and good judgment
Ability to work rotating shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays

Required Education and Experience: 
High school diploma or equivalent; certified by the Virginia State Department for Criminal Justice Services to perform police duties in the Commonwealth of Virginia or be able to obtain Virginia certification within 12 months of employment; must possess a valid Driver's License; previous law enforcement experience.

Preferred Education and Experience: 
Associate's degree in political science or related field; or a combination of related education, experience and training that equates to a degree; previous experience in law enforcement supervision; previous experience in criminal investigations.

This position includes Commonwealth of Virginia and CNU employee benefits; selected candidate must have ability to work rotating shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays; selected candidate must attend 2-day New Employee Orientation Program.
