Guidance and Control Engineer-17889 

 

Position Description
 The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Job Summary: Opportunity to work with a talented and inclusive team developing next generation guidance and control methodologies for hypersonic flight. Implement trajectory generation and optimal control techniques to maximize system capabilities. Create models from first principles that accurately represent vehicle performance while limiting computational burden. Perform simulations using optimal control software (GPOPS, POST, OTIS, or similar). Interface with nonlinear programing software (SNOPT, IPOPT, KNITRO, or similar) to maximize solver performance.

Duties:
  1. Guidance and control utilization and development for hypersonic flight systems. (30%)
  2. Implement optimal control methodologies software performance. (30%)
  3. Vehicle test and evaluation activities. (20%)
  4. Document and present analysis findings as appropriate. (10%)
  5. Interact with sponsors and representatives of other organizations. (10%)

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, applied mathematics, or related technical discipline with relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of flight dynamics, guidance, navigation, and control.
  • Experience using modeling and simulation tools.
  • Strong computer and programming skills and proficient with MATLAB.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with individuals of different experience levels and backgrounds including external industry and military personnel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • The qualifications needed in this job also include initiative, interest in skill development and the flexibility to accept assignments of varied scope and skill. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • M.S. or PhD. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, applied mathematics, or related technical discipline with 3+ years of flight systems modeling and simulation related experience.
  • Experience with optimal control software such as GPOPS, POST, OTIS, or similar.
  • Experience with nonlinear program solvers such as SNOPT, IPOPT, KNITRO, or similar.
  • Knowledge of guidance system hardware for flight systems.
  • Strong knowledge of optimal control theory and/or model predictive control.
  • Experience developing 3-DoF / 6-DoF flight simulations.
  • Experience in parallel programing or GPU programing.
  • Proficient with Simulink. 
Special Working Conditions: Travel of 10 to 20 days a year is likely.

Security: Secret Clearance is required.  Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level.  Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
