Position Description

JHU APL is looking for talented, enthusiastic individuals to contribute to high impact, insightful analyses that address critical national security and military challenges. Successful individuals are inherently curious, flexible, out-of-the-box thinkers, with good critical thinking skills, independent judgement, and excellent presentation styles.


The scientists and engineers at APL work on many advanced systems and cutting-edge technologies. A main focus for the National Security AnalysisDepartment (NSAD) is to guide that work in the long term, providing analyses that offer possible solutions to tomorrow’s challenges in national security,space, and health. We don’t offer ‘cookie cutter’ solutions, the Analysts in NSAD get to the root of the issue and ensure that we address the keyproblems faced by decision makers, not just their underlying symptoms.




  1. Contribute to, as part of a team, and/or lead analyses of systems and their operations; associated doctrinal, policy, organizational, training, logistical, or command, control, and communications considerations; and/or other topics of concern to senior decision makers, all in areas relatedto national security, health and other related military, homeland defense, or related interagency operations. (70%)
  2. Communicate results of work in a clear and concise fashion. Effectively communicate one-on-one and in groups. Document work efficiently andaccurately. Effectively present work to colleagues, sponsors, and small audiences that are familiar with content. (15%)
  3. Develop analysis plans, identify effectiveness measures and data requirements, craft analytic approaches, and interpret results, and document and communicate results to sponsors. (15%)

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s  degree in the physical sciences, mathematics, operations research, social sciences, law or a related discipline, with analytic experience
  • Ability to make significant contributions to projects and analyses
  • Strong analytic curiosity and creativity
  • Ability to operate independently in the execution of assignments
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of research techniques
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact positively and somewhat independently with clients.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Master’s or PhD  in the physical sciences, mathematics, operations research, social sciences, law or a related discipline, or JD
  • Current Secret or above clearance
Security: Top Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Top Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
